The best summers ought to include at least one road trip. When we were living in New Zealand that usually meant heading north for lakes and beaches. So we jumped at the chance when Rich & Sarah mentioned they were going to exchange vows on a beautiful secluded NZ beach. We would be both photographers and guests, amongst friends, and hanging out in one of our favourite holiday spots. Ahh yes!
Rich & Sarah got married in the UK last year (see the blog post here) but wanted to celebrate their marriage with close friends & family in NZ who couldn’t make it over. Knowing these guys, it was never going to be traditional. Replace church building with beach, sit down dinner with backyard BBQ and first dance with garage party and you’ll get what I mean. It was a total reflection of who these guys are and that’s what makes the best weddings.
The ceremony took place on the edge of Opoutere Beach, a truly unspoilt spot, ten minutes walk from the nearest car park along a path that winds its way through an ancient forest. Family and friends were invited to gather together under the trees where Rich & Sarah were waiting to greet them. The group then made its way to the beach where Rich & Sarah exchanged vows overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
A beach setting calls for a different kind of post-ceremony celebration to confetti or driving away in an old car – like swimming! Then it was back to Sarah’s parent’s house in Whangamata for a BBQ, where gas powered grills were furiously cooking away while guests enjoyed beer & wine alongside seafood canapés in the late afternoon sun. As dusk settled the party moved to the garage where Whitney, MJ and a whole host of other legends were blasted from the stereo.
Pretty much a perfect day: sun, beach, swimming, beer, BBQ, party and two of our friends declaring their love for one another and committing their lives together.
